Wicks
Which wick to choose? Read HERE.
Wicks are an essential part of any candle, as they provide the flame that melts the wax and releases the fragrance. Wicks come in different sizes, shapes, materials and coatings, depending on the type of candle you want to make. Some common wick materials are cotton, paper, and wood. The wick material affects the burn rate, the flame size, the smoke production and the scent throw of your candle. Choosing the right wick for your candle is important to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
Wicks are divided into two types:
- Waxed and fitted onto a metal sustainer (sold in pieces) - most often used with plant waxes to make container candles.
- Unwaxed in spools (sold by meter or spool) - intended for all types of waxes and can be used for all types of candles.
Wicks are marked with an approximate diameter of the pool which forms when the candle burns and wax melts. The actual diameter depends on the wax material, manufacturer and manufacturing process, as well as room temperature while burning. The specified diameters are indicative only, and the most suitable wick can only be found through experimentation.
